What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics, or pisciponics, is “a sustainable food production system that combines conventional aquaculture, (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks), with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment.” (1)

In laymen’s terms, aquaponics involves farming fish in tanks and using the water and fish waste in the water tanks to feed plants. The system is usually set up in closed greenhouses to create a stable climate for the plants, trap heat to accelerate plant growth, reduce water-loss through evaporation, and reduce crop loss due to pests.

span style=”font-size: 1.17em; line-height: 1.5em;”>Why Aquaponics?<

  • It uses 90% less water than traditional agricultural methods
  • It is 100% Organic
  • Locally grown produce reduces the environmental impact of food production
  • It is self-sustaining: Fish cultivation supports greenhouse operations
  • Climate change drought is forcing changes in the way we grow our foods

There are several schools out there that have “run the numbers” (please take a look at the links) which are a great over-view of the latest aquaponics technology.
